Dorothy Lorraine Hooten (better known as Lorraine) was born October 4th, 1943 to Dorothy and Robert Draper. She grew up in Plainfield, New Jersey where she attended public school. She graduated from Plainfield High School in 1962. From high school, Lorraine continued her education by attending and graduating with a bachelor’s degree from Trenton State Teachers College (now known as The College of New Jersey), in 1966. She taught grammar schools in Bound Brook New Jersey before receiving her master’s degree.
With a passion for teaching, Lorraine secured a teaching position in the East Orange, New Jersey public school system. After serving many years as a teacher, she became a counselor at Barringer High School in Newark, New Jersey, where she received many certificates of recognition for inspiring so many students to fulfill their dreams, goals, and ambitions. While working, she met the “love of her life”, Thomas Hooten, Jr. and on August 24 th , 1988, they married. She was a loving and devoted wife.
She retired after 35 years, and spent her time enjoying life with her husband in the home which she and Thomas built in Old Bridge, New Jersey. There, they hosted dinner parties, celebrated birthdays, holidays, and annual cookouts. They delighted entertaining their many relatives and friends. Lorraine loved people and was a friend to all who knew her. Her beautiful smile and graciousness were an important part of who she was. She enjoyed traveling to various vacation spots and spending time with Thomas.
On May 10, 2019, after six months of battling complications from diabetes, our beloved Lorraine left us to be with the Lord. She will be joining her husband Thomas of 31 years, who died suddenly just three months earlier.
Lorraine was predeceased in death by her parents Dorothy and Robert Draper and her nephew David Watson. She is survived by her sister Barbara Watson, nephew Sean Watson, stepdaughter Tanieka Misa Hooten, grandchildren, Justin Combs, Madison and Niko Brim, sisters-in-law Denise Holloway and Cheryl Hooten as well as many other relatives and friends.
She will be greatly missed.
