Obituary

On Sunday Morning, January 13, 2019, Richard Armstead Washington passed away peacefully at the Clark Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Clark, N.J.
Richard the son of the late Thomas and Anna Washington was born on March 6, 1932 in Blakely, G.A. After attending High School in Newark N.J., he later enlisted in the United States Air Force(Private First Class) in 1950 during the Korean conflict where he developed a love for aircraft mechanics and for the young woman who would later become his wife. On March 5, 1950 Richard who was united in Holy Matrimony to Vivian Major in Montclair N.J.. From this union two children were born. Diane who predeceased them in death and Richard Glen. During the early 1960's, they moved from Newark to East Orange N.J., then other locations such as Scotch Plains N.J., Port Saint Lucie Florida then finally settling back to Scotch Plains in 2016. After his Honorable discharge from the airforce as a airplane mechanic in 1954, Richard began working at Ford Lincoln Mercury in Linden NJ. Soon after that, he started his own trucking company and was a pivitol part of the construction of the three major highways during the early 1960's including interstates 280, 80 and 287 in Northern New Jersey until 1967.
He began employment with The Green Cab Company in Newark, then opening his own company, R&G Taxi Services from 1967 until 1983. He then changed careers again by working for Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill N.J. as a mechanic until his retirement in 1991. Richard was also an avid sports fan who loved being with his family. After retiring, he traveled to multiple countries in Europe and Asia with wife Vivian.
Richard leaves to cherish fond memories of a son and daughter, Richard Glen Washington, Diane Ruth Williams,daughter Malissa ,
grand daughter Dana Bickers ( Tarence), grandsons Xavier Baldwin, Denis and Jalil , great grand children Jaden and Kennedy Bickers, and 3 siblings. James Washington,and
sisters Earline Mclaughlin and Florie Roberts.
