Sterling West, Jr., also adoringly known as "Way" and "Poppy,"
was born on July 15, 1934 in Elizabeth, NJ to the late Sterling West, Sr. and Theresa West. He departed this life at age 84 after an extended illness on Friday, October 5, 2018 at home in Plainfield, NJ surrounded by loved ones.
Sterling was educated in the Linden, NJ public school system. In high school, he set a track record in the 800 meter that wasn't broken until the '80s. After graduation, he had several odd jobs, including working as a long distance truck driver. After attending Rutgers for a short time, he joined the Linden Police Department. During his time on the force, he rose to the rank of sergeant.
In 1971, Sterling married the love of his life, Miriam, taking on the role of father to her two young daughters, April and Kelly. Later that year, he initiated the Plainfield Crime Prevention Unit. Due to the program's success, in 1973, he was sought after and recruited by the Newark Redevelopment and Housing Authority to be Director of Security. He later joined Mutual Benefit's Executive Security Service until his retirement in 1997. During his career, he received many awards and accolades.
Sterling was a faithful member of Shiloh Baptist Church. During his life, he enjoyed listening to jazz, including Lester Young, reading, traveling to warm destinations, cooking, and rooting for his beloved Dallas Cowboys. He also loved playing cards with his "Mirum."
Sterling was preceded in death by his youngest brother, Edward West, a casualty of the Vietnam War, on August 19, 1968. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 47 years, Miriam West; two daughters, April Jackson of North Edison, NJ and Kelly Swasey of Metuchen, NJ; twin brothers, Arnold West (Brenda) and Ronald West (Carmen); five grand‐ children, Chris (Tiffany), Ashlee, Kalid, Kerron, and Donovan; four great grandchildren, Darrel, Kamaya, little Chris, and Iman, along with a whole host of cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
