The Rev. Dr. William Gerald Howard transitioned into eternity on March 7, 2019 at St. Luke’s Warren Campus in Phillipsburg, New Jersey at the age of 77.

William Gerald Howard is a native of Boston, Massachusetts. He received the Bachelor of Arts Degree from Emerson College, situated in the Beacon Hill district of Boston. He studied at Harvard University Divinity School and earned his Clinical Pastoral Certificate from Andover Newton Theological Seminary in Newton, Massachusetts. Reverend Howard is a 1975 graduate of Boston University School of Theology. He completed the requirements for the Doctor of Ministry Degree at Drew University, Madison, New Jersey in 1982. Reverend Howard was the former pastor of Union Baptist Church, New Bedford, Massachusetts. He also served as the state president of the Congress of Christian Education for the Massachusetts and Rhode Island Baptist State Convention. Since 1973, he has been a member of the minister’s council of the American Baptist Churches, USA.
In 1979, Pastor Howard accepted the call to the historic 82-year-old Calvary Baptist Church, Plainfield, New Jersey. He led the church in the vision of establishing a Family Life Center, the creation of the Bible Learning Center and in implementing outreach ministries that address the needs of the church, youth, and community. Pastor Howard participated in team mission projects in Jamaica, Haiti, Russia and Africa. In 2002, Dr. Howard was invited to serve on the Commission of the Baptist World Alliance.

As a Certified Pastoral Counselor, Dr. Howard has served on the staff of Clergy Consultants under the supervision of A. Johan Noordsij, MD, a counseling group located in Summit, New Jersey for more than twenty years. He is a past member of the New Jersey Transit Minority Council and one of the founding trustees of the Plainfield Interfaith Neighborhood Housing Corporation and a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
Reverend Howard has conducted Christian Education workshops and classes for churches in New Jersey and other states as well. He is a former member of the faculty for the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education. Pastor Howard worked as a consultant and served as the Director of Christian Education for Galilee Baptist Church in Trenton, New Jersey.
Special Recognition for the work in the community was presented by Plainfield Public Schools, Concerned Urban Clergy, NAACP (Plainfield, New Jersey Branch), Cultural Arts Association of Union County, National Council of Negro Women. He was also recognized in 1999 as one of City News (A Black publication based in Newark, New Jersey) 100 Most Influential People in New Jersey.

Dr. Howard is survived by his wife of 54 years, Priscilla Ann Howard; his daughter, Rev. Tene’ Howard; his siblings Ethel Howard Williams, John Arthur Howard, Stanley Donald Howard and Warren Kenneth Howard and a host of family, friends and sons and daughters in ministry.
