Eugene Norris Brookins, Sr., a beloved husband, father, and pastor, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Wednesday, August 28, 2019 in Plainfield, New Jersey.

Pastor Brookins was born December 16th, 1933, in Sullivan, West Virginia, to Morris and Effie Mae Brookins. After graduating from Bert Pullman High School, he worked as a coal miner. He then began his career in the United States Air Force where he was stationed at Sampson Air Force Base in Ithaca, New York, and he went on to graduate from Miller University with a degree in Theology. Reverend Brookins served as Associate Pastor at Calvary Baptist Church, and later became Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church in Colonia, NJ for 21 years. Simultaneously, Reverend Brookins was employed with National Starch Laboratories, where he retired after serving 30 years as a lab technician.
Poppy, as he was affectionately called, was known as a kind, generous, and intelligent man who inspired people with his faith and hope in God. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, uncle, pastor, and friend. He was serious about his work for the Lord, but he was also known for his sense of humor and amiable personality.
Reverend Eugene Norris Brookins leaves behind his wife Barbara of 50 years; five children: Diane Grant Welburn (Michael), Eugene Norris Brookins, Jr., Adrian Brookins, Ernestine Nelson (Robert Talee), and Kevin Dickerson; five grandchildren: Taichien Dickerson, Marva Welburn, Talee Nelson, La’Shonte Dickerson, and Adrienne Brookins; five great-grandchildren: Madison, Isabella, Edyn, Naïla, and Parker; two brothers: Bernard “Jack” and Alphonso Brookins, as well as a host of nieces and nephews he cherished.

Reverend Brookins is preceded in death by his parents, Morris and Effie Mae Brookins; his brothers, Charles Johnson, Leo Brookins; his sisters: Catherine, Anna Bell, and Lizzie; and grandchildren, Jakeema Kelly and Jada Fain.
