Obituary

Lawrence Merriweather was born September 25, 1922 to the late Henry and Katie Merriweather. He departed this life April 27, 2018 at his home in Scotch Plains, NJ.
Lawrence was baptized at Poplar Spring Baptist Church in Trenton, SC. He later joined Claremont-Lafayette Presbyterian Church in Jersey City, NJ and eventually became an Elder. When he moved to Scotch Plains, he attended with his wife St. John Baptist Church in Scotch Plains, NJ. Lawrence gave four years of service to his country during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Following his time in the service, he lived in New York for a short stint and later moved to Jersey City where he
began his career as a barber. He loved his work and the community he worked in for over 57 years.
During this time he met many of his friends and continued friendships for many years. In 1951 he met and married Susan Scott. From this union two children were born, Linda (Merriweather) Montgomery and Lawrence Merriweather, Jr. (deceased). Lawrence shared a special bond with his children whom he cherished and adored, where he was both mother and father when his wife passed.
After a time, Lawrence was introduced to Ella Brown-Duren by his son. They were married in 1973 and have shared 44 years of a wonderful life and marriage together. In later years they became grandparents for the first time. Lawrence loved and adored his grandchildren and great grandchildren, and they loved their “PAPA.”
Lawrence loved baseball and he would watch games faithfully during the season. His favorite team was the San Francisco Giants.
Lawrence was pre-deceased in death by his son Lawrence Merriweather Jr., he leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife Ella Merriweather; one daughter Linda Montgomery and son-in-law Joseph Montgomery ; one daughter-in-law Gretchen Merriweather; four grandchildren Lawrence Merriweather III, Kourtney Merriweather, Morgan Merriweather, Gabrielle Prendatt-Carter; three great grandchildren Landon, Dez and Sparkle; two sisters Estelle Dickson, Georgia Pugh; one sister-in-law Addie Mickle; a host of nieces and nephews and endeared friends.
