Obituary

Karan Adams Cooper, was born July 15, 1943 in Detroit, Michigan to the union of the late Valora Jones and Herman Ralph Adams. Karan was the eldest daughter of the couple.

Karan grew up in Detroit, Michigan. She came from very humble beginnings growing up in the Brewster Projects in the Black Bottom Neighborhood of Detroit. Karan, being the eldest of her sisters was the leader of the pack. She grew up in church and accepted Christ at a young age. She was baptized at ‘The Farm’ of The Church of Our Prayer. Her mother Valora, outfitted with only an 8th grade education, encouraged Karan to reach for the stars academically and made certain she tested and was accepted into one the best schools in Detroit, Cass Technical High School. Cass Tech was the only magnet school in the City of Detroit. As a result, she followed her best friend, Brenda Hill, a fellow Cass Tech graduate, to Long Island, New York. It was that job that catapulted her into the decision to pursue a trade and attend the Mandl School for certification as a Dental Assistant.
In 1964, Karan met John Arthur Cooper. After dating for a few years the two decided to get married in May 1969 at Hollywood Baptist Church in Amityville, NY. From their union, their daughter Erika Kay Cooper was born in 1970.
Karan was an avid reader and connoisseur of the arts, fashion and interior design. She often visited museums in New York and attended Broadway and off-Broadway plays. She enjoyed visiting botanical gardens, traveling to the City to shop, and going to the beach on Long Island on her days off in the summer. She loved to read Architectural Digest and Vogue Magazine.
Karan leaves to cherish one daughter, Erika Kay Cooper-Phillips, of Roselle Park, NJ (Dr. Cory B. Phillips), two grandchildren, Taryn Spencer Phillips and Cory Asher Phillips, two sisters, Rhunell Denise Adams of Detroit, MI (Jon Eric Adams) Sharon Anita Adams of Ypsilanti, MI, a nephew, Jarred Xavier Hugle of Ann Arbor, (Diarra Booker-Hugle) and one niece Dayna Brianne Davis of Ypsilanti, MI.
