Hortense was born on August 20 1924, in the parish of St. Elizabeth, in Malvern, the District of Roseberry, in Jamaica, West Indies. Her loving parents were Margaret (Palmer) Fagan, and step-father Leslie Fagan Sr. Hortense attended Bethlehem All Age School. She was a regular church member at Bethlehem Moravian Church. She relocated to Kingston in her early twenties. She found work in a soda and ice cream establishment for many years. She later found employment
at Farel Of New York Garment Manufacturing Corporation. She worked at Farel, alongside her niece, Patricia (Patsy). Farel was her last long-term employment, until she departed from her native land. Hortense migrated to the United States of America in 1967. She reluctantly left behind her only child, Hurdley Martin so that she could provide a better life for him. In 1969, she returned to Jamaica to married her long time sweetheart, Roy Blair. Hortense was fondly called Horty by those closest to her. She was especially thrilled when she was called Mrs. Blair. She was a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and a friend to many. She was a kind, generous person, who would give you the ‘shirt off her back”. On occasion, she was known to be quite blunt, and her words could cutlike a knife. Her words could be colorful at times. She was famous for saying “I am a good woman”. She was quick to tell everyone that she was a British woman, hence her being called Ms. British.
Hortense was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret and Leslie Fagan Sr.; two sisters - Cleara (Fagan) Davis, and Gretel Swaby- Thompson; six brothers - Lebert Fagan, Hanzel Swaby, Kenneth Mullings, Selvin Fagan, Osbourne Fagan, and Cleveland (Supa) Fagan.
To mourn her passing, she leaves behind her son, Hurdley Martin, and his wife, Joan; three grandchildren - Sandra, Ann, and Richard; two great grandchildren - Chrystal and Nathan; one sister - Mereta (Fagan) Blackwood (Jamaica); three brothers - Leslie Fagan (Plainfield) and his wife Norma, Clovis Fagan (Jamaica), and Denzil
Fagan (Florida) and his wife Daisy; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and numerous friends.
