On Thursday at 6:50 pm surrounded by his loving family, this transitory life came to a close.
Harry L. Bennett was born in Sumter, South Carolina to the late Sallie Bennett and Norman Dais. After the death of his mother, Harry was sent to Plainfield NJ and raised by his family Catherine and Moses Boykin. Harry’s Aunt Maggie Anderson joined in with his upbringing.
He was educated in Plainfield Public schools.
Harry held various jobs throughout his career. Harry loved his job as a Supervisor with the Department of Public Works for the City of Plainfield. There were times when Harry was in so much pain, but he would go to the Police Department to ensure the work was completed. Harry was also an associate of Judkins Colonial home in Plainfield, NJ for many years. Harry worked faithfully until he had to retire in 2018 due to his health.
Harry joined the Rose of Sharon Community Church in Plainfield over 25 years ago. Harry was known for his cooking abilities, he faithfully cooked for Rose of Sharon Community Church especially for New Year’s celebrations, Sunrise services and annual cook-outs. In addition to cooking for the church, Harry cooked for family functions as well as his coworkers. Everyone loved his ribs. Harry was a devoted family man who cherished spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and his great-grand. Harry had a special bond not as a son-in-law but as a son with his in-laws Alfort and Minister Deborah Belin. Harry’s plan was to retire and take care of his in-laws in South Carolina. However, our plans are not God’s plan but Harry “didn’t complain” about his situation. Harry fought a good fight and he kept the faith knowing that God was in control.
Harry leaves to cherish precious memories, his devoted and loving wife of 43 years, H. Yetta Bennett; sons: Shawn Dawkins, Martice (Janelle) Bennett; daughters: Shilonda Kellam, Evita Bennett; brothers: Elijah (Patricia) Grant, Raymond (Tammy) Dais; Sisters: Shirley (Samuel) Alston, Norma “Jacque” (Charles); In-laws: Alfort and Minister Deborah Belin; Grandchildren: Khyla, Kamar Kellam, Yamirah Bennett-Bernabela, Devin, Martica, Martice Jr., Mekkhi Bennett, Khemet and Kaelani Vannetta; great-grandchild: Zuri Kellam-Copeland. Godchildren: Almeen Jasper, Dyesha Belin, Asia Gordon, Jemari Sweat, aunts, uncles, brotherin-laws, sister-in-laws and a host of relatives and friends.
