Dorothy Olivia Flythe was born May 11, 1938, in Pendleton, North Carolina
to Joanna and Ernest Flythe. She grew up in Norfolk, Virginia, and after
graduating high school in 1957, she moved first to Rahway, New Jersey
and shortly thereafter to Westfield. In 1960 she married William Harris
Monroe, and gave birth to her daughter, Andrea. In 1962, her daughter
Felecia was born, and in 1964 the family moved to Windsor Avenue,
where Dorothy resided until she was called home on February 21, 2019.
Working at Boyle-Midway in Cranford, from 1965 until the company closed
in 1984, Dorothy made a number friends with whom she always remained
close. From there, she went on to work at Aircast in Summit, where again
her kindness and generosity of spirit proved an asset, and she met more
people who remained her close friends for life. Dorothy was a creative
person who enjoyed cooking, baking, crocheting, and gardening. Nothing,
however, gave her more joy, pride, and unbounded pleasure than talking
about and spending time with her three long-awaited grandchildren.
Dorothy was an active volunteer with many organizations and worthwhile
projects that involved providing help to women in prison, military
veterans, and basically anyone in need. She lent support and gave
regular donations to the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, Heifer
International, and Inner City and Africa Ministries. For her, the personal
was political. In addition to staying informed about local and national
politics, she strongly believed in supporting local black-owned businesses
and always avidly encouraged everyone, young and old, to voice their
opinion by voting.
She leaves to cherish fond memories, her daughters Andrea Monroe and
Felecia Monroe O’Connell; grandchildren Liam, Emma, and Clara
O’Connell; sister Mary; brother Larry; and a host of other family members
and friends who will miss her dearly.
She was preceded in death by three siblings, Eunice Flythe Greene, Roy Lee (Chris) Flythe,
and Ernest (Buddy) Flythe.
As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be sent to the
charity of your choice or to one of Dorothy’s favorites mentioned above.
